JOLIET — Six Joliet Junior College employees have been sent home as a precautionary measure after one of the employee's girlfriends was tested for the novel coronavirus and the flu.

The college's spokeswoman, Kelly Rohder-Tonelli, told The Herald-News that a JJC facilities worker notified campus officials that his girlfriend, a resident of Chicago, had been exhibiting "generalized symptoms of an illness." The girlfriend then visited a hospital to be tested for the coronavirus as well as several strains of the flu.

While the facilities worker reportedly told college staff that he felt fine despite his girlfriend's symptoms, he and five other employees were sent home as a measure of precaution.

Rohder-Tonelli told The Herald-News that the couple doesn't live together, but the college wanted them to stay home until the test results became available, just to be safe.

The college previously suspended classes and other services in an effort to keep students off campus.

As of May 11, Illinois reported 79,007 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 3,459 deaths. Will County has 3,740 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and Kendall County has 431 confirmed cases.
