State Senator Patrick Joyce (D-Essex) helped introduce the first Lion Electric Company manufacturing facility in Will County.

"I am pleased to welcome Lion Electric to Will County, as it will add to our state’s industry-leading capabilities. This facility will allow us to increase our contribution to the local economy and provide employment opportunities in our community," Sen. Patrick Joyce wrote in a Facebook post.

The Canadian-based electric vehicle company plans to invest $70 million in the facility, which is projected to be among the largest in the U.S. industry. The new establishment will produce approximately 750 new job opportunities upon launching during the second half of 2022. Lion Electric hopes to make 20,000 electric vehicles per year at the center.

The Joliet site will be the largest production plant of its kind in the country, spanning 900,000 square feet. Its location was chosen based on its distance to highways and railroads.

“I’m proud that our community will serve as a destination for this manufacturing company and will create high-quality jobs,” Joyce told the Willl County Gazette. “I look forward to watching this project unfold and the facility grow for years to come.”

The new business, currently under construction, will also serve as a large economic contributor to the Joliet community, the company says. Committing to provide long-term, safe work, it will soon open its doors to begin its hiring process.

"We're bringing green jobs, selling a product that creates a healthier environment for workers, for students, for passengers, and communities across this great country," said Nate Baguio, Lion Electric vice president of sales.
