Curtis Granderson was born on March 16, 1981, in Blue Island, Illinois, and raised in the south suburbs of Chicago. His father was a dean and physical education teacher, while his mother worked as a chemistry teacher. Granderson attended Thornton Fractional South High School in Lansing, Illinois, where he excelled in baseball and basketball, earning All-State honors and leading his team in several statistical categories.
He continued his baseball career at the University of Illinois at Chicago, playing for the Flames. Granderson received All-American recognition for his consistent hitting and defensive skills, and UIC retired his jersey number in tribute to his accomplishments. The Detroit Tigers selected him in the 2002 Major League Baseball draft, and he made his MLB debut in 2004. Over a 16-year career, Granderson played for the Tigers, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Los Angeles Dodgers, Toronto Blue Jays, Milwaukee Brewers, and Miami Marlins. He was named an MLB All-Star three times and earned the Silver Slugger Award in 2011.
Beyond his athletic career, Granderson dedicated himself to community service. He established the Grand Kids Foundation to support education and sports programs for inner-city youth. Additionally, he served as an international ambassador for Major League Baseball. Granderson’s professional achievements and community involvement highlight his enduring ties to Blue Island and the greater Chicago area, where his journey began.
