The Village of Park Forest hosted its biennial “Community Oscars” at Freedom Hall last Saturday, recognizing residents, businesses, and organizations for their contributions to the community. The event included a VIP reception, red-carpet photos, and an awards ceremony that honored 32 individuals and groups in categories such as volunteerism, education, public service, customer service, and community impact.
“The Park Forest Oscars celebrate everyday people who make an extraordinary impact in our Village,” said Evelyn Randle, community relations manager. “From volunteers and educators to business leaders and public servants, these awards highlight all the ways residents contribute to Park Forest.”
Among those recognized was Jeff Cartwright in the People’s Choice category for his continued support of neighbors through snow removal and yard work despite personal illness. Other honorees included Mae Brandon with the Pioneer Award for long-standing service; Debbie Goldstein and Ella Jones as Volunteer Extraordinaire; Michele Johnson, Lamekia Davis, and Carolyn Williams for Making a Difference; Sophronia “Bree” Breedlove, Dr. Sandra Dafiaghor, Danielle Dixon, James McDannel, John Ruffin, and Imageworks for Best Customer Service.
Additional recognitions went to Larry Monray (special recognition), Sandi Lynn (Spoken Word award), Carrie Malfeo (Village Favorite), students Jacob Vanarsdale and Josiah Williams (Outstanding Students), Jane Nicoll (Local Historian), and Trustee Randall White along with his congregation for Most Active Church.
Randle noted the broader purpose of the event: “It gives honorees an extra boost to keep doing what they’re doing and shows the community that we see them.”
The Community Oscars are held every other year by the Village of Park Forest. In alternate years, smaller “Good Egg” awards are presented. The next Community Oscars will take place in 2028.
