The Village of Park Forest Public Works Department urged residents on March 20 to help prevent street flooding by clearing debris from storm drains as spring rains increase.

Keeping storm drains clear is important because clogged drains can cause water to pool on streets, creating hazards for drivers and pedestrians and sometimes affecting nearby property. The department said that leaves, litter, and other debris are common causes of blockages.

Stormwater in Park Forest flows directly into local waterways and detention ponds without treatment, so any trash or chemicals washed down the drain can pollute the environment. Officials said that maintaining clear drains helps protect both public safety and the ecosystem.

The Village manages more than 4,000 storm drains, with crews inspecting them regularly. However, officials noted that during heavy rain or rapid seasonal changes, it is not possible for crews to reach every drain quickly. Residents are encouraged to check curb lines near their homes before and after storms and remove any debris they find. Public Works officials said this simple action can make a real difference in preventing blockages and flooding.

Residents are reminded not to rake leaves or yard waste into the street, as this can worsen flooding by clogging drains. Safety tips include using rakes or brooms instead of hands when clearing debris and never trying to lift heavy grates or reach inside a drain. Major clogs should be reported to the Public Works Department at 708-503-7702.

According to the official website, Village of Park Forest promotes community health and engagement through dedicated commissions and programs. The village has also received recognition for its sustainability efforts in town planning and community practices according to the official website. Efforts to bolster economic conditions and deliver municipal services are achieved through collaboration and innovation according to the official website.

The village operates under a council-manager government with a mayor and six trustees as its governing body according to the official website. Leadership in sustainability is demonstrated by supporting the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Climate Protection Agreement according to the official website. Educational opportunities addressing community issues are provided through its Civic Leadership Academy according to the official website.
