The Orland Park mayor and village board held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new village facility last week.
Mayor Dan McLaughlin and the board worked with Palos Community Hospital parent company St. George Corporation to save the 77,000-square-foot facility.
The former Palos Health and Fitness Center on West Avenue was scheduled for demolition. By working with hospital officials to revise the hospital's expansion plans, the village was able to save the facility.
“A lot of people use the center for its therapeutic water pool, the indoor swimming pool and fitness amenities and it worked out well for everyone -- truly a win-win situation,” McLaughlin said.
Renovating the now Orland Park Health and Fitness Center instead of building an indoor pool saved the village millions of dollars in planning and construction costs.
The full-service facility fills the health and fitness needs of the community with fitness programs, cardio and strength training equipment, group exercises, swimming, an indoor track and a full court gym.
“We’ve talked about adding an indoor pool to the village’s Sportsplex and our saving this building eliminates that need,” McLaughlin said. “The village’s Recreation Department will now offer indoor swimming at the Orland Park Health and Fitness Center.”
