Blue Island FD responds to 54 fires in 2016

Blue Island Fire Department responded to 308 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the South Cook News.

The calls in Blue Island included 54 fires - 26 structure fires, 11 vehicle fires and 15 other fires. The fire department also responded to two calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $735,220 in fire loss - or about $13,615 per fire.

The department also received 254 false calls, including two malicious calls and 252 other false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related injury. Additionally, one fire service member was injured in fire-related incidents.

The Blue Island Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has 20 active employees and 27 retired or inactive employees, was $852,747 in debt as of December 2015, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $15,792 for every fire in 2016.
