Oak Lawn FD responds to 178 fires in 2017

Oak Lawn Fire Department responded to 799 calls in 2017 - 0.3 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Oak Lawn included 178 fires - 92 structure fires, 22 vehicle fires and 64 other fires. The fire department also responded to 17 calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $1,018,200 in fire loss - or about $5,720 per fire.

The department also received 604 false calls, including 13 malicious calls and 591 other false calls.

The calls resulted in four civilian fire-related injuries and two civilian fire-related deaths. Additionally, one fire service member was injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Oak Lawn Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 71 active employees and 110 retired or inactive employees, was $1,795,734 in debt as of December 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $11,223 for every fire in 2016.
