Calumet City FD responds to 275 fires in 2017

Calumet City Fire Department responded to 1541 calls in 2017 - 79.4 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Calumet City included 275 fires - 173 structure fires, 35 vehicle fires and 67 other fires. The fire department also responded to two calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $716,400 in fire loss - or about $2,605 per fire.

The department also received 1264 false calls, including three malicious calls and 1261 other false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related injury and one civilian fire-related death. Additionally, one fire service member was injured in fire-related incidents.

The Calumet City Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 55 active employees and 49 retired or inactive employees, was $3,477,330 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $23,982 for every fire in 2016.
