Thornton Township High School District 205 students suspended, expelled 5,704 times in a single school year

Thornton Township High School District 205 reported two expulsions and 5,702 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

The district transferred 226 students to another program instead of suspending or expelling them.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 5,704 students during the year. That equates to 109.1 percent of the 5,227 students enrolled.

Students were expelled for two incidents with unspecified reasons.

Of the 3,422 in-school suspensions, 1,856 were given to boys and 1,566 were given to girls, all of whom were high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 3,389 incidents. There were 14 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 2,469 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 2,280 out-of-school suspensions, 1,272 were given to boys and 1,008 were given to girls, all of whom were high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 1,870 incidents. There were 233 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 752 incidents, students were suspended for 1-3 days.
