Homewood School District 153 students suspended 266 times in a single school year

Homewood School District 153 reported 266 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 266 students during the year. That equates to 13.6 percent of the 1,955 students enrolled.

Of the 200 in-school suspensions, 154 were given to boys and 46 were given to girls, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 177 incidents. There were 19 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 191 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 66 out-of-school suspensions, 51 were given to boys and 15 were given to girls, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 38 incidents. There were 24 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 36 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
