Oak Lawn Community High School District 229 students suspended 1,726 times in a single school year

Oak Lawn Community High School District 229 reported 1,726 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

The district transferred six students to another program instead of suspending or expelling them.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 1,726 students during the year. That equates to 99 percent of the 1,744 students enrolled.

Of the 1,582 in-school suspensions, 984 were given to boys and 598 were given to girls, all of whom were high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 1,527 incidents. There were 40 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 1,545 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 144 out-of-school suspensions, 121 were given to boys and 23 were given to girls, all of whom were high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 134 incidents. There were seven incidents of violence that caused physical injury. For 66 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
