Village of Park Forest issued the following announcement on Dec. 7.
The fire department is giving gifts of smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms for homeowners in need from Park Forest. Each year the community of Park Forest has a Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony on the Village Green. The Village Green's is decorated with numerous Holiday trees celebrating the season. The fire department has decorated a tree and has included gifts for it residents. The Holiday tree is decorated with coupon tags that a homeowner can take from the tree and bring to the fire station in exchange for a new smoke alarm or CO detector. Once you turn in your coupon we will schedule a time for a firefighter to come to your home and install the new device. Sadly many homes go without the protection of smoke alarms. 3 out of 5 fire deaths occur in homes with no or non functioning smoke alarms. We want to change that statistic and give smoke alarms to our residents. Like wise Carbon Monoxide is also a known silent killer. All homes in Park Forest are required to have CO detectors installed in them to alert occupants of the presence of the this colorless and odorless poisonous gas. So if you are 18 years old and a Park Forest resident we will install one detector per home. A member of the fire department must install the detector. This Holiday season visit the Village Green, enjoy the Holiday Trees and get a coupon for a smoke or CO detector. Smoke detectors are provided through the "Sound the Alarm, Save a Life" campaign from the American Red Cross and CO detectors provided in part by a donation from the Park Forest Firefighters Union.
