The price of local government in 2017: City of Markham

The City of Markham budget was $28.91 million for its 2017 fiscal year, or $5,779 per household.

That's a decrease of 3.3 percent from 2016, when the city spent $29.90 million, or $5,977 per household.

Markham has 5,003 households and a population of 12,538.

Since 2001, the City of Markham budget has grown by 90.1 percent, from $15.21 million. The city population has fallen 3.7 percent over the same period, from 13,026.

Salaries accounted for 30.6 percent of city spending in 2017. Markham property taxpayers paid $8.86 million for 129 full-time employees and 126 part-time employees.

In 2001, the city had 90 full-time employees and 10 part-time employees, and spent $4.79 million.
