A new slate of sexual harassment and discrimination laws is now on the books in Illinois after Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed Senate Bill 75 into law on Friday.
“This is a major step toward ensuring that people can live and work free of sexual harassment and discrimination,” said State Sen. John Curran (D-Downers Grove), who co-sponsored the bill.
The bill includes a number of new rules, including prohibiting unions from assigning the same union representative to both the victim and the alleged perpetrator in disciplinary hearings involving sexual harassment claims, adding limits to the use of non-disclosure agreements that can prevent victims from reporting harassment and abuse claims and providing additional, specific protections for casino and hotel workers.
The bill also requires all state officials, employees and lobbyists to complete sexual harassment and discrimination prevention training.
Following the bill's passage and signing, Curran expressed pride that the state has taken the initiative on these issues.
“This makes it clear that we will not allow harassment and discrimination to continue in the workplace, especially in government,” Curran said.
