Illinois State Senate District 41 issued the following announcement on Nov. 25.
State Senator John Curran (R-Downers Grove) has officially been named to serve on the Joint Commission on Ethics and Lobbying Reform. The group is tasked with studying state ethics laws and issues, and to make recommendations for new legislation.
“It’s obvious from even a cursory read of state news that the General Assembly is in dire need of better and stronger ethics rules with strong enforcement mechanisms to make them stick,” said Curran. “This can’t be just another blue ribbon panel that offers up little more than window dressing.”
The Joint Commission on Ethics and Lobbying Reform was created by House Joint Resolution 93, which narrowly passed the Senate during the fall veto session. Those who voted against the bill noted that they were concerned about the partisan manner in which the commission would be set up, with 12 members appointed by Democrats and only 4 appointed by Republicans. Meanwhile, a number of bipartisan ethics bills weren’t acted on, despite bipartisan support for the content of the legislation.
“I believe that this commission needs to be held to a higher standard than previous efforts on the issue, and that it needs to produce the kind of reforms that will positively change the culture and practices in Springfield,” said Curran. “I’m hopeful that this commission will be able to operate in a bipartisan fashion that is focused on what is best for the people of this state.”
