Illinois State House District 36 issued the following announcement on March 3.

State Rep. Kelly Burke, D-Oak Lawn, is partnering with state Rep. Fran Hurley, D-Chicago, and state Sen. Bill Cunningham, D-Chicago, to host a property tax reform town hall with Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi on Tuesday, March 10 at 6 p.m. at the Green Hills Library, located at 10331 S. Interlochen Dr. in Palos Hills.

“When I talk to members of our community, residents often mention the burden that property taxes place on their household budgets,” Burke said. “It is clear that relief is needed, and that we need to work together with state and local officials to address the issue of skyrocketing property taxes.”

Burke is a longtime advocate for property tax reform and has supported a number of measures to provide relief to homeowners in Illinois. Burke recently backed the creation of the Property Tax Relief Fund to offer rebates to those claiming a homeowner’s exemption, as well as the Property Tax Relief Task Force, a bipartisan commission charged with examining the state’s current property tax system and providing comprehensive recommendations to ease the burden placed on homeowners.

Burke’s town hall event will feature a discussion on steps taken toward property tax relief at both the state and local level. The event is free and open to the public.

“Hosting a town hall on property tax reform provides an opportunity to hear feedback from residents and have a conversation with local homeowners about the steps taken toward real relief,” Burke said. “I look forward to talking directly with locals about the progress made to ease the burden of property taxes and the steps we can continue to take in the future.”
