Cook County Complete Count Census Commission met Jan. 9.

Here is the minutes provided by the commission:

Present: Chair McMorris, Vice Chair Anaya, Jphn Belse (First Baptist Church of Melrose Park), Grace Chan (Coalition for a Better Chinese American Community), Cassandra Guice (1 Woodlawn), Deborah Lane (ATU Local 308), Phyllis Logan, Martina Hone

(on behalf of Dorri McWhorter YWCA Metropolitan Chicago), Nancy AsirifiOtchere (United African Organization), Walter Turner III (Baptist Ministers Conference)

Cook County Commissioners Stanley Moore and John Daley also attended the meeting.

SUBCOMMITTEE MINUTES

I. Call to Order

The January 9th meeting of The Cook County Complete Count Census Commission Community and Faith Based Organizations Subcommittee was convened via an inperson meeting from 10:03 a.m. – 11:24 a.m. The meeting was chaired by Lamell McMorris. This meeting was open to the public, no public comment was given.

II. Public Comment

a. No public comment was given.

III. Vote on meeting minutes from December 5, 2019

a. The minutes were not approved due to lack of quorum.

IV. Overview of last Commission meeting

a. Outreach Funding

i. Representatives from The William Everett Group provided an overview of the County’s funding process, funding timeline, and the role of Census Champions.

ii. Over $1.5m awarded in 1st round of funding, approximately $300,000 left.

iii. Organizations that have received over $250,000 from other sources would not qualify for County funding and funding cannot be used for salaries.

b. Hard to Count Map

i. The William Everett Group explained that 95% of Hard to Count areas in Cook County were covered by grantees, and all districts were covered by at least one organization.

ii. Subcommittee members can apply for funding

iii. Program Administrator will target gaps in funding

iv. Subcommittee discussed importance of involving faith-based community in outreach

v. Program Administrator encouraged everyone to host a Census related event. They can assist with process.

vi. Group discussed challenges with messaging and misinformation, and considered countering this in the media.

V. Discuss January community meeting/roundtable a. Plans for future community events

i. Subcommittee had been unable to proceed with a couple options due to fact we do not have a budget and there were requests for payment

ii. YWCA and 1Woodlawn willing to collaborate for Jan. 23rd Woodlawn event

iii. Chair suggested hosting events in Side Suburbs and West Side in February

iv. Deborah Lane reiterated venue options in South Side, said there will be a Census section at Women’s March

VI. Next Steps

a. Group agreed they will contribute to a Google Doc with various ideas for venues and ideas for events.

b. Rev. Turner will do outreach will do outreach for a February event in South Suburbs.

c. Vice-Chair suggested members write a joint op-ed on Census misinformation.

VII. Adjournment

a. Meeting adjourned at 11:24 a.m.
