The economic impacts of COIVD-19 have had a far reach, and Cook County officials recognized that when they decided to temporarily waive certain taxes, fees and fines until the end of May.
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle announced that the waiving of fees will be extended, which could allow businesses to keep almost $45 million at a time of reduced revenues, the Daily Herald reported in late April.
"Extending the period of time to pay these fines, fees and taxes is the right decision while businesses and residents continue to struggle with the economic fallout of the coronavirus," Preckwinkle told the Daily Herald. "During these tough times, pushing the deadlines on this economic package will provide additional relief to our businesses as hopefully a little breathing room to cover expenses."
The relief will offer waiver extensions for several taxes, including on alcoholic beverages, amusement, tobacco, gasoline and hotel accommodations, the Daily Herald. Many other fees an fines from the Departments of Transportation and Highways, Environment and Sustainability, Revenue, Building and Zoning and Public Health will also be waived temporarily.
