State Rep. Kelly Burke (D-Evergreen Park) says she plans to hold both offices after being elected mayor of Evergreen Park.

With 14 of 15 precincts reporting, Patch.com reports Burke held a sizeable 2,152 to 371 lead over challenger Shawn Good. Burke, who has served the 36th District since 2010, decided to launch her campaign for mayor after current Mayor James Sexton announced his retirement last fall and threw his support behind Burke’s run.

Burke also successfully ran for Evergreen Park village trustee in 2019. Illinois law allows for her to remain a state representative and hold the role of mayor of Evergreen Park at the same time.

Burke seems convinced that she can give her full attention to both endeavors.

"There are so many facets to the mayor's job that one single accomplishment can't define a successful term," she said in her candidate profile. "I will keep Evergreen Park a place where people want to live, have a business, raise their families, and age gracefully with the support of the community."

A 28-year resident of Evergreen Park, Burke is an attorney by trade and has served on the Evergreen Park library board.

Burke headed the Good Government slate, where fellow slate members Carol Kyle, Norm Anderson and Mark Phelan also handily won their races.
