Sen. Michael Hastings (R-Frankfort) recognized more than 400 South Suburban high schoolers in April for being named to the 2021-2022 Illinois State Scholars by the Illinois Student Assistance Commission.
"Those who excel in the classroom in high school set themselves up well for a lifetime of success," Hastings posted to Facebook April 29. "These remarkable young people always deserve recognition for their hard work – but even more so as they persevered to emerge from a global pandemic as one of our state’s brightest. Congratulations to all."
The scholars rank in the top 10% of the seniors in the state, representing 676 high schools in 102 counties. Selection for the prestigious award is based on several factors, including standardized test scores, class rank and GPA.
Those that were selected from the South Suburbs come from seven different high schools in the area. These schools include Hillcrest High School, Southland College Prep Charter High School, Tinley Park High School, Victor J. Andrea High School, Providence Catholic High School, Lincoln-Way Central High School, and Lincoln-Way East High School.
Award recipients receive a certificate of achievement and a digital badge to add to social media pages and online profiles to show potential college recruiters and employers.
