Dear Editor,
The state of Illinois is nowhere near reaching a full recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic. Yet lawmakers are doing nothing to stem new property tax hikes or alleviate supply chain issues for businesses that are struggling just to survive.
Since 1963, Illinois property taxes have grown at more than twice the rate of inflation, and this trend is only accelerating. Right now, our state has the second-highest property tax rate in the country, but we are on pace to take the top spot after new tax hikes were just passed for Chicago and the surrounding communities.
On top of this, state lawmakers seem intent on making supply chain issues even more difficult here in Illinois. With increased regulation and taxes during a global pandemic that have already hurt businesses, consumers are increasingly unable to purchase everyday goods they need or shop for alternative products. Instead, Illinois families are forced to focus on putting food on the table, while small business owners are scrambling to keep workers employed and their doors open for business.
You would think the hardship of the last few years would at least pause plans for more taxes or burdens on businesses, but it has been the opposite in Illinois. If our lawmakers in Springfield really care about our state and their constituents, they should work to keep more money in our pockets, while lowering unemployment and supporting small businesses.
