Governors State University issued the following announcement on Dec. 18
Governors State reached the halfway point of its 2021-22 season on Saturday and marked the occasion with a 93-84 victory over St. Ambrose at Lohman Arena. The 93 points matched the team's highest output of the season.
Although GSU led most of the game, the outcome wasn't decided until the final minutes as St. Ambrose whittled a 13-point deficit down to a bucket with 5:17 left in the second half. GSU answered with a 13-2 run to keep the pesky Bees in check.
Rookie Adam Taylor had a breakout game, scoring 20 points in 27 minutes with the aid of six 3-pointers. DeAndrey Robinson recorded 19 points and nine rebounds while Payton Harley amassed 16 points and seven boards. Phil Holmes Jr. (another rookie) added 15 points and Amarion Osborne made his season debut after spending time with the varsity reserve squad.
The Jaguars (6-9, 3-5 CCAC) set season highs for 3-pointers made (14) and attempted (29) to improve their record to 4-1 at Lohman Arena and 6-4 all-time against SAU.
"We had a very good week of practices and it translated into a great effort today," said GSU Head Coach Tony Bates. "It's about that time for us to make a run if we want to be a conference playoff team."
SAU (4-9, 3-5 CCAC) was paced by Tom Kazanecki's 24 points and 12 rebounds.
With Tuesday's game at Cardinal Stritch postponed, the Jaguars have the rest of December off.
