City of Palos Heights Liquor Committee met Oct. 29.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

A public hearing was held before the Liquor Commissioner of the City of Palos Heights at City Hall, 7607 West College Drive, Palos Heights, Illinois 60463, to consider a request for a Retailer’s Class H Liquor License filed by Carolyn Johnson and Elizabeth Ryan, a/k/a VLC, Inc. d/b/a Pass Health Foods, on property located at 7228 W. College Drive, Palos Heights, Illinois.

The hearing was called to order at 9:00 a.m. by Liquor Commissioner Mayor Robert Straz. Present were Carolyn Johnson, Elizabeth Ryan, and Margaret Carey, Assistant to the Mayor.

Mayor Straz noted the public hearing notice was published in The Daily Southtown on October 8, 2021. He reviewed the application file and background checks and said everything appeared to be in order.

The Mayor discussed the business as he is familiar with Pass Health Foods. They have been in the community for a very long time. Carolyn and Beth said their business has been going well but they have had requests from customers about offering alcohol that is organic, gluten free, allergy free, etc. They plan to have a small refrigerated section and separate display near the register.

The Mayor asked about distributors. Carolyn and Elizabeth said they have been in contact with a few distributors. There is not an exclusive distributor, but a few who offer the types of alcohol they are seeking.

The Mayor asked about anticipated sales. Carolyn and Elizabeth said it is difficult to estimate at this time. They are optimistic though, because there is not much competition for this specialty alcohol.

No members of the community were present to dispute the request.

The Mayor explained that liquor licenses in Palos Heights were created by ordinance. He would make his recommendation to approve the request for a Class H Liquor License to the City Council at their meeting scheduled for November 2, 2021 at 7:00 p.m.

The hearing was adjourned at 9:20 a.m.
