Village of Lansing Human Relations Committee met Oct. 21.
Here are the minutes provided by the committee:
The outgoing Director of the Library, Debbie Albrecht, introduced the new Director, Lisa Korajczyk.
CALL TO ORDER Commissioner McDaniels called the meeting to order at 6:07 p.m.
ROLL CALL Roll call revealed the following Commissioners present: McDaniels, Garcia, Ivy, Stinson, Wright
APPROVAL OF MINUTES Commissioner McDaniels asked for a motion to approve the minutes of the August 19, 2021 meeting.
Commissioner Garcia so moved
Commissioner Stinson seconded.

CHAIRPERSON REMARKS
Commissioner McDaniels introduced herself as the new Chairperson for the HRC and stated she is excited about her appointment. She addressed the commissioners and stated she would like to see the commissioners working as a team. Commissioner McDaniels explained as being part of the team they would have to become friends and build personal relationships. She mentioned and asked that the commissioners make the effort to respond to emails. She also talked about team building, and possibly having a Christmas gathering.
She pointed out the new format of the agenda that was created with the help of the attorney in order to include more action items on the agenda.
She mentioned she would like the commissioners to get name tags.
HRC LIAISON
TRUSTEE HARDY Trustee Brian Hardy congratulated Commissioner McDaniels on her appointment and stated he would like to be involved with moving the commission forward and help with reaching out to the residents. He mentioned he spoke with Police Chief Al Phillips, who is looking forward to working with the HRC.
WELCOME NEW
COMMISSIONER Commissioner McDaniels welcomed the newly appointed commissioner, Latrice Ivy. Commissioner McDaniels asked all of the commissioners to share with the group information about themselves and reasons they decided to get involved with the HRC. Commissioners, Ivy, Wright, McDaniels, Stinson and Garcia all shared this information and some of their background with the commission.
OLD BUSINESS
A) Chief Al Phillips
Commissioner McDaniels stated she met with Chief Phillips. One of the items they discussed was the police department partnering up with the HRC for a student scholarship program.
B) 2022 Youth Event
It is still open for the HRC to host a summit or youth event in 2022.
WEBSITE & LOGO
Trustee Smith addressed the commissioners and explained when she was on the commission they had agreed upon a logo, however, it was deleted from former commissioner Sanchez computer. She asked if they had reviewed the logos she sent to Commissioner McDaniels. There were discussions and it appeared there were concerns about the logo and Commissioner Garcia offered to research logos the HRC could possibly use. Chairperson McDaniels stated she would like to have a logo completed by November’s meeting and asked Commissioner Garcia to work with Commissioner Bolz and have something to present at the next meeting. Commissioner Ivy recommended that people communicate with their ideas for the logo. Commissioner Stinson stated he liked the idea of having a professional create the logo.
COMMITTEE REPORTS
Commissioner McDaniels stated that 3 committees were formed in March with commissioners assigned to specific committees, along with subcommittees to help and assist. An outline was created as a guideline for the committees. Since the assignment, 3 commissioners have resigned.
The new assignments of the committees are:
Planning and Organizing – Commissioners McDaniels and Ivy
Media and Communications –Commissioners Bolz and Garcia
Resource – Commissioners Stinson and Wright
NEW BUSINESS A) Trick or Treat at Fox Pointe
The HRC will have a table at the Halloween event on October 31st at Fox Pointe where they will pass out candy to the children attending that day.
C) Pastor Alliance – Mayor Breakfast on December 2
Commissioner McDaniels had met with several pastors back in June and July regarding the HRC’s involvement with the Mayor’s Breakfast. She recommended since there has been no further communication about their role that they would not be having any type of involvement, but suggested if any commissioners are available that day to attend the breakfast.
D) Thanksgiving Food Drive
There were discussions about the HRC hosting a Thanksgiving Food Drive. Commissioner McDaniels mentioned reaching out to Cam Sanchez about joining him and his Thanksgiving food drive. He asked her to send him an email and she did. When they spoke he informed her he did not have all of the details. As of the meeting she has not heard from him. It was also discussed selecting two families in Lansing and provide a food basket for Christmas. Commissioner Ivy brought up having an Easter Food Drive and we agreed it would allow more planning time.
E) Yearend Report
Commissioner McDaniels explained that according to the HRC ordinance a yearend report is due at the end of the year. She asked the commissioners to complete the SWOT form that will help the HRC grow and it will assist in the yearend report.
ACTION ITEMS A) Participation in the Trick or Treating
Commissioner Garcia made a motion to approve the HRC to participate In the 2021 Trick or Treating event at Fox Pointe. Commissioner Wright seconded.

B) Pastor Alliance – Mayor’s Breakfast
No motion was needed to not participate at this event.
C) HRC Thanksgiving Food Drive
There were discussions about the HRC sponsoring a food drive and how to move forward independently or with an organization.
Since it will take more time preparing and getting sponsorships, it was decided to table this event until a later time. An item agenda may be added for the next meeting..
It was brought up by the attorney and Commissioner McDaniels that the organizing is done outside of the meetings and the action items are discussed at the meetings.
A motion was made to table a Thanksgiving Food drive by Commissioner Garcia. Seconded by Commissioner Stinson.

PUBLIC COMMENT Bob Malkas passed out his personal memoir to all of the commissioners and asked they read the book and comment at the next meeting.
ANNOUNCEMENTS Commissioner McDaniels informed the commissioners she participated in a virtual child abuse presentation that included families from different cultures and how it can affect people differently. She offered to share if anyone was interested.
Commissioner Stinson shared that TFS Drama Club is having a play at TFS South, The Adam’s Family, On November 12-14th.

Commissioner McDaniels asked for a motion to adjourn at 7:28 p.m.
