The Governors State women's basketball team closed its 2021-22 season on a high note, pulling out a two-point win, 66-64, over Roosevelt in the Electric Line Rivalry Saturday on Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day.
Just minutes after the contest ended, GSU's postseason fate was sealed, as Trinity Christian won its game to secure the final CCAC Tournament berth based on a tie-breaker against GSU. The Jaguars had appeared in the postseason the last two seasons.
Today's CCAC game marked the final game for five seniors/graduate students, who were honored before tipoff and comprised the starting lineup: Sharnita Breeze, Kaitlin Adams, Lotte Miller, Jordan Towery and Kennedy Weigt.
Breeze registered a team-high 16 points, concluding her career as the second-leading scorer (1,050) in team history. Towery compiled 11 points, six assists and six rebounds while Cashay Dixon posted 10 points to log the top scoring average (15.9 ppg) on the team. Weigt converted three 3-pointers, setting the school season record with a long-distance shot at 8:59 of the fourth quarter. She finished her lone season with the Jaguars with 51 treys after setting the career record at Lenoir-Rhyne (198).
GSU rallied from eight points down in the fourth quarter, seizing the lead with 35 seconds left to produce a season split with the Lakers.
Roosevelt (8-18, 7-15 CCAC), which used seven players, was led by Nicole Poole's 19 points.
Governors State finished its seventh varsity season with a 10-19 overall record, going 9-13 in the CCAC to tie for eighth place.
