Pastor Chris Butler, a pro-life Democrat running for the First Congressional District in Illinois, is a "rare bird," according to former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.
Butler was recently invited on the Mike Huckabee Show as a guest.
“One of the things that I really think is important to point out is that there are so many voices in the community,” Butler said on the program. “But there are so few platforms for those voices because most of the people who platform folks in our community will not allow you on their platform if you're going to come and talk about the sanctity of life. I am just one of those folks who have decided that we have to push beyond that because the matter is too important, to save the lives of people who were created in God's own image.”
Butler added in a press release that he has worked with others with diverse backgrounds.
“I have openly worked with people across the entire political spectrum," he said, according to The Southland Journal. "I look forward to bringing this skill to Congress.”
Huckabee, noting that "Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot said that she wants her city to be an oasis of abortion," was delighted to have Butler on the show and was vocal about his support for Butler’s candidacy.
“I thank God for you, I really do," he said. "I am hoping that folks will find out how to help you be the congressman for that Chicago District."
Butler will face a crowded field with 21 candidates vying for the position that will be vacated by U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush, Ballotpedia reported. The primary election will be held on June 28.
Butler, the lead pastor of the Chicago Embassy Church Network in South Holland, is running on a campaign to "recognize the importance of protecting the life of the unborn child while valuing the life of the mother," as well as putting an effort to "change the current abortion narrative that is hyper-polarized and threatens the health of our democracy."
Illinois' First Congressional District covers most of Cook County, the South Side of Chicago and southwest to Joliet.
