Orland Park Mayor and Republican congressional candidate Keith Pekau called out Democratic U.S. Rep. Sean Casten for tweeting that inflation is at 0% when the 12-month inflation rate is still 8.5%.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics' Consumer Price Index summary, released Wednesday, reported the rate of inflation over the last 12 months as 8.5%. In the last year, the costs of food have increased by 10.9%, energy by 32.9%, gasoline by 44%, new vehicles by 10.4%, and transportation services by 9.2%.
"Sean Casten's platform: 'Don't believe your own eyes: Inflation is zero. There is no recession. Gas prices are down. And crime isn't a problem.' I don't know whether to be insulted or to laugh." Pekau said in Thursday's Facebook post.
"Inflation is 8.5 percent as announced yesterday. But Casten's leader Joe Biden says it's at zero. Then why vote YES on the so-called inflation reduction bill? Because Sean Casten’s goal is not inflation reduction, it’s to create hundreds of billions in give aways to the green industry, tax you, tax small businesses and add 87,000 MORE IRS agents (currently there are 78,000) to go after you and those small businesses," he said.
Casten remained optimistic in posts on his social media accounts.
"The inflation rate hit 0% this past month, an encouraging sign," Casten said in a tweet. "We still have work to do to ease the pain folks are feeling when faced with high-costs, which is why I will vote YES on the Inflation Reduction Act this Friday."
Pekau will face off against incumbent Casten for Illinois' 6th District House seat in the November general election, according to Ballotpedia.
