City of Oak Forest Veterans Commission met June 16.

3. Approval of Minutes
∙ Approval of the May minutes by Jim Pioth 2nd by Don Snedden.
o All members present approved, no nays.
4. Liaison to the City Report Paul Selman:
∙ At council meeting mentioned Flag Day and Army birthday of 247 years.
5. OLD BUSINESS:
∙ Flag receptacle next cleaning out date is Saturday July 2 about 9:00.
∙ Paul and Joe will continue to talk with Tom Ceska about painting base of Nike Missile. Paul actually met with Tom at Nike missile site.
∙ Midlothian Independence Day Parade June 25 line up 10:00 AM at Kilpatrick and 147. Three or four members may attend.
∙ Senior luncheon May 26 presented colors. All went well except pledge started before we posted colors. Had audio of missing man table and it was well received.
∙ Will the TV planned for the vestibule at City hall ever be installed? This would be an information source almost like our outdoor sign.
6. NEW BUSINESS:
∙ Veterans Voices (Orland Park Veterans Commission) invited any veteran commission member to join them on Wendella cruise on Lake Michigan July 20.
∙ Last month a question was asked does Coast Guard members receive Medal of Honor?

o Army
The US Army has awarded 2,451 medals, the most of any branch of the military. Over half of the total amount of Army Medal of Honor recipients were awarded during the Civil War, with 1,522 recipients.
o US Navy
The US Navy has awarded 749 medals to members of the US Navy. In addition, members of the US Marines and US Coast Guard are also eligible to receive this medal. There have been 299 medals awarded to members of the US Marine Corps and one medal awarded to a member of the US Coast Guard.
o US Air Force
There have been 18 medals awarded to members of the US Air Force since it was created in 1965.

o On this day in 1963, Soviet cosmonaut Valentina V. Tereshkova became the first woman to travel in space, having been launched into orbit aboard the spacecraft Vostok 6, which completed 48 orbits in 71 hours.

Dennis – Asked Jim Watson if he wanted a ride to meeting but he declined. Abe Lincoln Cemetery had a huge crowd of people probably numbers higher than 1500.
Tom – Say a prayer tonight for the 16 Veterans at Manteno that have contracted COVID and keep them in your prayers.
Lewis University is giving rides in a B-24 for a cost.
