Juan Manuel Rodriguez scored with 5:52 left in regulation to lift Governors State to a 2-1 over Campbellsville of the Mid-South Conference Saturday evening.
It's been a good opening week for the Jaguars, who beat the defending national champions (of the National Christian College Athletic Association) in Campbellsville and tied seventh-ranked Indiana Tech on the road Wednesday.
Late-game heroics are nothing new for Manuel Rodriguez, who helped GSU win a 2001 CCAC Tournament game with four seconds left. His game-winner tonight was setup after Juan Araque applied pressure in the offensive third, shaking off a defender. Araque finished with three points, scoring GSU's first goal of the season just nine minutes into the contest on a pass from Diego Camarena.
GSU (1-0-1) controlled play until the 69th minute, when Guillermo Ferreiro put the Tigers on the board with a header from close range, bringing the crowd to life at Finley Stadium. The goal ended a shutout streak of 159 minutes by Emigdio Tormo Lopez. The first-year goalkeeper made a stellar save with eight minutes left to preserve the win and received help from defender Alexander Judd, who blocked a shot with seven minutes remaining as the Jaguars held off a charge from the Tigers.
"This win was a step in the right direction," said GSU Head Coach Matt Eggert. "We're learning to play together as we take on a challenging schedule to begin our year."
Campbellsville, making its season debut, compiled a 16-5-2 record last year.
Governors State returns to action on Wednesday, meeting first-time opponent Northwestern Ohio.
