COLLECTIVE EFFORTS EARNS JAGUARS FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON

Governors State placed three scorers in double-figures in handing first-time opponent Cornerstone an 68-62 defeat Saturday afternoon at the Athletics and Recreation Center.

Cornerstone (0-4) opened the game with a quick two points before senior guard Justice Crooks rallied the next four points to give the Jaguars their first lead. After first half the Jaguars lead 40-30 with senior forward Aaliyah Hull leading the way with nine points.

Governors State (1-2) jumped out to a 13-point lead in the third quarter. Tabetha Jones finished with a team high 13 points, five rebounds, and dished out five assists. Angelique Cowan chipped in with 10 points. GSU also regained the services of fifth year senior guard Lotte Miller who has been sidelined with an ankle injury. First-year shooting guard Kendall Winston scored a career high 10 point in just eight minutes of play.

GSU countering the Golden Eagle's full court press the entire game  but it gave the Jaguars trouble in the fourth quarter that allowed Stephanie Ainsworth to go on a 10-0 run. Ainsworth led all scorers with 22 points. The Jaguars closed out the game in the fourth quarter by knocking down shots from the charity strip.

"Tonight was a good test for us, to face the size and shooters of Cornerstone forces you to make smart decisions with the ball," said GSU Head Coach Tonishea Mack. "We will continue to work to strive to get better every day but overall, I'm pleased to get our first win at home."

GSU will open Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference play next Wednesday, at the Shannon Center to take on Saint Xavier at 5 p.m.
