At the Jan. 17 meeting of The Village Board of Tinley Park, Village President Michael Glotz issued a proclamation honoring resident John Surufka, a World War II veteran and beloved resident of the town who recently marked his 100th birthday.
Surufka's daughter Vicki Wiley spoke about him, saying, "My dad always thought of everybody else first. He never wanted anything, just a thank you or a cup of coffee. So this is a wonderful honor for him."
Surufka, a World War II veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart Medal, celebrated his 100th birthday on Jan. 10.
After returning home from war, Surufka settled into civilian life and has been living in his hometown ever since. He spent many years as an active member of the local community, taking part in church activities and volunteering at various organizations.
Surufka, until recently worked as a gardener and cook for St. George Church in Tinley Park. The board was told he shared his knowledge at the garden by teaching students and families best gardening practices, as well as helping combat weeds with an old Army shovel.
Surufka had long harvested the produce grown in the garden which was then donated to the Tinley Park Food Pantry.
His cooking talents are also well-known throughout his community as he has taken second place in several local cooking competitions.
Though Surufkawas unable to attend the village board meeting, his daughter was present to accept a plaque on his behalf.
At the meeting, Wiley spoke very highly of her dad, calling him a selfless man who loved making other people feel special and valued. Despite losing her mother years ago, Wiley fondly recalled how Surufka has always been there for their family in times of need.
