HIGH-OCTANE OFFENSE IN THE ARC - TRINITY INTERNATIONAL EDGES GSU 89-86

In a back and forth CCAC Conference offensive display by both teams, Trinity International University hit free throws late to beat Governors State University 89-86 Wednesday night in the GSU ARC.

The entertaining game was tied 45-45 at halftime with the teams changing leads four times in the opening 20 minutes.

The Trojans (12-8, 7-5 CCAC) led by 13 points 37-24 with five minutes remaining to the break before GSU staged a late 21-8 run keyed by Kyle Jackson with seven first half points and Tai Walters-Whitaker totaling 11 points and six assists.

Both teams were clicking offensively in the first half with TIU hitting 20-33 field goals (60.6%) and GSU shooting (18-35), 51.4% from the field and 6-13 (46.2%) from three-point range.

The quality scoring action continued in the second half with Trinity International jumping out to a 58-50 lead before Walters-Whitaker converted a four-point play to cut the gap to 58-54 with 13:50 to play in the contest. William Bates hit a layup to tie the score at 58-58 with 12:31 remaining.

The next 12 minutes featured more lead changes and both teams converting offensively. Nick Mikash hit a big three-pointer to put GSU up 83-80 in the final three minutes and Adam Taylor hit a jumper with 2:35 left to give the Jags a 85-82 lead. TIU out-scored the Jaguars 7-1 in the final two minutes to secure the road win.

GSU (5-17, 5-9 CCAC), had five players score in double figures led by Walters-Whitaker with 21 points, 11 assists, four steals and three rebounds.

The Jags' Taylor had 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Bates scored 19 points, Mikash 13 and Jackson had 10 points and five rebounds, two steals playing 28 minutes off the bench .

Governors State next plays at IU Northwest, February 1, 7 p.m. CST start in Gary, Indiana.
