City of Oak Forest Veterans Commission met Jan. 19.

Here are the minutes provided by the commission:

1. Pledge of allegiance 

2. Roll Call 

3. Approval of Minutes 

∙ Approval of the November minutes by Don Snedden 2nd by Tom O’Neill. 

o All members present approved, no nays.

4. Liaison to the City Report Paul Selman: 

∙ Nothing to report from Council Meeting.

5. OLD BUSINESS: 

∙ Flag receptacle now has plastic pallets for bottom to keep the flags dry. Need to adjust pallets to fit container.

∙ Flag receptacle is full again. Need to plan an empting out day when warmer. 

∙ Suggestions for parade replacement. One suggestion have a concert or event at Gazebo on July 4.

∙ One of our members could use a little yard clean-up assistance. We will assist in cleaning things up for him on a warmer date.

6. NEW BUSINESS: 

∙ Christmas Trees have been removed decoration bagged and at PW.

∙ Drive by for a Korean Veteran went well. About 12-15 cars participated with PD, FD, Mission Barbeque and Honor Flight. Patriot Motorcycle riders do only for 100 year old and funerals. Motion by Dennis Mitzner to Honor 90 year old birthday plus for drive by 2nd by Don Snedden.

∙ Birthday yard signs for veterans we could reuse. Paul checking prices and patterns.

∙ There now is a TV monitor in the vestibule at City hall for information posting. The Veterans commission could also have a TV monitor to display all Veterans pictures and information. We would remove pictures from hallway.

∙ St. Damian’s school would like to have a color guard for February 1 kick off for Catholic School’s week celebrating “Our Nation”.

∙ FLEADH is Saturday March 4. Will we participate in parade?

∙ Operation Gratitude, says thank you to all who served which include Veterans, active duty, and First Responders.

∙ Oasis is a group for sight impaired. Seen a presentation on a reader that translates articles to words.

∙ 1966 Indira Gandhi becomes India's first female prime minister  She was assassinated on October 31, 1984.

∙ 1915 Georges Claude patents his neon discharge tube  Neon lighting soon became popular for outdoor advertising.

∙ 1829 Goethe's “Faust” (Part 1) is premiered  

The work is considered one of the greatest works of German literature.

∙ Paul – Gave away two challenge coins while in Florida.

7. ADJOURNMENT: Adjourned at 20:00 by Dennis Mitzner 2nd by Don Snedden. All members present approved.

Our next meeting is Thursday February 16, 2023 at 19:30 in Blue Room.

Dates and times could change with approval of committee. Changes will be posted in agenda if possible.
