Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker (D) named Bria Scudder as Deputy Governor for Public Safety, Infrastructure, Environment and Energy, effective April 10, according to a WAND article published on Tuesday.
“Bria Scudder has already shown her dedication to public service and the people of Illinois through her hard work earlier in my administration, and I’m thrilled to welcome her back to continue that work as Deputy Governor,” Pritzker said. “Her portfolio includes some of the most important issues currently facing our state, and I’m looking forward to working with her to continue making Illinois stronger.”
Scudder previously served in the Governor's Office as First Assistant to former Deputy Governor Christian Mitchell, who stepped down from his position in early March.
"I am proud to have had a driven, passionate public servant like Christian Mitchell on our team as we worked to improve the lives of Illinoisans across the state," Pritzker said in a statement published on January 27. "Although we will be sad to see him go, there is no doubt in my mind that his work ethic and commitment to equity, progress, and public service will be an asset to any organization that has the honor of working with him."
Mitchell had served as Deputy Governor since the beginning of Pritzker's first term. Prior to that, he served for six years in the State House of Representatives and was the first African American to serve as Interim Executive Director for the Democratic Party of Illinois.
Scudder is a University of Missouri - Columbia graduate who currently serves as Director of State Government Affairs for the Midwest region at AbbVie, where she helps to manage state and local related issues in 12 states, and she previously served in Pritzker's administration as First Assistant Deputy Governor. Before working with Pritzker, Scudder worked in the Illinois Attorney General's Office as the Senior Government and Community Liaison, served as a staff member for the Illinois House of Representatives, and managed several Statehouse campaigns.
