Ottawa High School board candidate Josh Mammen wants to take politics out of local school board elections.
If elected, Mammen said that when seated he would start pushing for school board meetings to be more open.
He also did not express concern about the influx of $500,000 in Democrat Party spending on school board races across the state.
"It should be about the candidate," Mamen said. "Let the best candidate win."
Governor JB Pritzker, who provided funding for school board races, recently tweeted that Illinois would be a "bulwark of progress, equity, and justice" while he's governor.
"We’re in a battle between an extremist GOP and a Democratic party that offers a future of strong leadership and possibility," he tweeted.
During a recent press conference, Pritzker labeled Illinois-based conservative grassroots organizations that recruit and support local school board candidates as “racists” and “anti-LGBTQ,” with a local mom and conservative grassroots activist Shannon Adcock directly being on the receiving end of some of his most disparaging comments.
When asked whether he had experienced any backlash or personal attacks that some candidates have faced for running against the orthodoxy of teachers' unions, Mammen said he has received "nothing but support."
