Community leaders and political candidates are coming together to address the critical issue of opioid addiction in neighborhoods.
The “Stop Heroin Addiction in Your Neighborhood” event, hosted by Christine Shanahan McGovern, State Representative candidate for District 36, will feature a range of speakers and opportunities for the community to learn about how they can make a difference in addressing the heroin epidemic.
The event, scheduled for Saturday, November 11th, from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM, will take place at Bourbon Street, located at 3359 W 115th St in Merrionette Park.
“As a nurse, I have seen the consequences of addiction. Please come to this event and join the effort to stop addiction,” Patricia Bonk, State Representative candidate for District 30, said on Facebook.
Among the featured speakers at the event will be David Sheppard, a former police chief from Robbins; Niki Conforti, U.S. House candidate for District 6; Herb Hebein, State Representative candidate for District 35; and Patricia Bonk herself. The event aims to raise awareness about the heroin epidemic and provide information on how individuals and communities can help combat addiction. Attendees will learn practical steps to save lives and get educated on drug use signs through the “Hidden in Plain Sight” trailer.
This meeting aims to address one of the significant challenges many communities face - the heroin epidemic - by bringing together local leaders, candidates, and concerned citizens for dialogue about finding solutions and supporting those affected by addiction.
According to recent DEA statistics, Fentanyl overdoses have become the leading cause of death for individuals aged 18 to 45 in the United States. This extremely potent drug accounts for nearly 70% of over 107,000 drug overdose fatalities within just a year. These alarming figures underscore an urgent need to address this deadly issue.
Illinois' House District 30 includes communities like Dolton, South Holland, Harvey, Markham, Oak Forest, Midlothian, and Homewood as well as parts of Tinley Park and Olympia Fields. It is currently represented by State Rep. Will Davis (D-Homewood).
