Blue Island Public Library Board of Trustees met Sept. 20.

Here are the minutes provided by the board:

I. Call to Order at 7:05pm by President Orozco

II. Roll Call

1. Present in Person: Trustees

a. Martin

b. Meyer

c. Nunez

2. Present via Zoom: Trustee Kinney

b. Also present: Director Anna Wassenaar and Sonia Rodriguez (Spanish Outreach) 

a. Absent: Trustee Esparza

III. Public Comment: None

IV. Guests: Sonia Rodriguez, the Spanish Outreach manager has been with the BIPL for over twenty years. She directs the Mexican Independence Day festival and the Children’s Day event in the spring. Sonia also teaches English classes here at the library.

V. Reading of August 2023 Meeting Minutes

a. Trustee Rauch motioned to accept the August 2023 meeting minutes with corrections; Trustee Peters seconded the motion.

i. All in favor: 7:10pm

VI. Financial Report

a. Revenue & Expense >Report reviewed.

b. Balance sheet > Reviewed.

c. Trustee Nunez motioned to approve the balance sheet and payables of $91,769.69 Trustee Sinde seconded the motion.

i. All in Favor: 7:16pm

VII. Director’s Report > Reviewed.

a. Building

b. Staffing- Char Miller will be the new Business Manager, Sally Malysa will be training her prior to departing from BIPL.

c. Programming- Many new events are scheduled for this Fall, some in cooperation with the Park District.

d. Community- Employees visited a few of District 130 schools, hoping to promote reading for all children.

e. Department Reports> Reviewed

VIII. Unfinished Business

a. Illinois Standards Chapter 9-10> Reviewed.

i. A video to be recorded to teach patrons how to find resources within the library. This will expand the training that is available for patrons.

IX. New Business

a. BIPL 2023 Budget Draft> Reviewed, budget tabled until October for further review.

b. Employee Health Insurance Proposal

i. Trustee Sinde made a motion to leave the LIMRIC Health Insurance Pool, Trustee Nunez seconded the motion.

a. All in favor: 8:04pm

c. Trustee Nunez made a motion to approve after hours events on October 20th, and November 3rd, changing normal business hours for both days, Trustee Sinde seconded.

i. All in favor: 8:07pm

X. Legislative Update

XI. General Communication:

a. Upcoming Events Banned Books Week will end on October 7th with a book reading by author Jarrett Dapier.

b. Trustee headshots to be taken to update the website.

c. Bomb threats at a few libraries thus far have been scare tactics, the Director is in communication with the Police Department as a preventive measure.

d. Trustee Sinde would like additional books added to the Litte Free Libraries around Blue Island, and an updated map available to patrons.

XII. Trustee Sinde made a motioned to adjourn; Trustee Rauch seconded.
