Illinois State House District 82 Representative, Nicole La Ha, has invited constituents to visit her office and collect glasses for viewing the impending solar eclipse. La Ha is currently campaigning for re-election to the state House of Representatives and will compete against Democratic contender Suzanne Akhras in the general election scheduled for November.
"Thanks to the Illinois Optometric Association for providing FREE protective glasses for the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8," said Nicole La Ha Zwiercan, Candidate for State Representative, according to Facebook. "Feel free to stop by my office in Lemont at 106 Stephen Street to say hello and to grab a pair!"
The forthcoming solar eclipse on April 8 is anticipated to be a total eclipse, visible from the US, Canada, and Mexico. According to NASA, the eclipse should be observable in Carbondale and nearby communities. The event is set to commence around 1:27 p.m., reach totality at 1:59:15 p.m., continue until 2:03:25 p.m., and conclude by approximately 3:18 p.m.

NASA cautions that individuals should not attempt to view the solar eclipse with naked eyes or through a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without a special filter as it could cause damage to their vision. Eclipse glasses - such as those donated by the Illinois Optometric Association - are darker and should adhere to the ISO 12312-2 international standard. Furthermore, NASA advises against using these glasses with cameras, binoculars or telescopes even when equipped with suitable filters. The only instance where it is safe to view the eclipse directly without eye protection is when the moon completely obscures the sun. NASA also recommends individuals planning to watch the entire eclipse use sunscreen, wear hats that shield their faces from sunlight, and don protective clothing.
