City of Hickory Hills City Council met May 23

Here are the minutes provided by the council:

CALL TO ORDER

The regular meeting of the Hickory Hills City Council was called to order by Clerk Joseph Stachnik on Thursday, May 23, 2024, at 7:32 p.m.

Clerk Stachnik stated Mayor Howley will be absent this evening and a Mayor Pro-Tem is needed. Alderman Waight moved to appoint Alderman Mike McHugh as Mayor Pro-Tem. Alderman Ferrero second. Roll call: Aldermen Ferrero, Fonte, Kman, Makropoulos, McHugh, Purtill, Waight aye. So approved.

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE

Mayor Pro-Tem McHugh led the Pledge of Allegiance.

Upon roll call, the following were present:

Mayor Howley and Alderman Zimmerman were absent. There being a quorum present, the meeting was called to order.

The vacancy of a Sergeant position and the need to fill the position was discussed during the Committee of the Whole Meeting. Alderman Fonte moved to approve the promotion of an Officer to Sergeant. Alderman Purtill second. Roll call: Aldermen Ferrero, Fonte, Kman, Makropoulos, McHugh, Purtill, Waight aye. So approved.

Police Promotions

At this time the following promotion was made.

Officer Scott Chicoine was given the oath of Sergeant by Police Commissioner Dale Jones. Father Mol gave a blessing for the new position. A small reception followed.

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

Mayor Pro-Tem McHugh opened the meeting to the public.

Ms. Maggio stated that she is concerned about speeding and loud engines revving on her block. Chief Bray stated that the Police Department will focus resources on this area.

JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS

Alderman Ferrero moved to approve the minutes of the regularly scheduled meeting of May 9, 2024, as printed subject to deletions or corrections. Alderman Fonte second. Roll call: Aldermen Ferrero, Fonte, Kman, Makropoulos, McHugh, Purtill, Waight aye. So approved.

REPORTS OF CITY OFFICIALS

MAYOR

The Hills Chamber of Commerce Executive Board Members: Phyllis Majka, President; Art Golden, Treasurer and Teresa Stack, Secretary provided an update regarding the 2024 Farmer’s Market including events and participating vendors.

CITY CLERK

Clerk Stachnik reported that LRS submitted a check in the amount of $7,500.00 as a donation towards community support. These funds have been deposited in the City’s Discretionary Fund.

CITY TREASURER

Treasurer Vodicka presented the Treasurer’s Report dated March 31, 2024, for approval. Alderman Kman moved to approve the Treasurer’s Report dated March 31, 2024. Alderman Ferrero second. Roll call: Aldermen Ferrero, Fonte, Kman, Makropoulos, McHugh, Purtill, Waight aye. So approved.

CITY ATTORNEY

No report submitted.

CITY ENGINEER

Mr. Spolar presented Invoice #44456, Payment Request #01 – Partial from Lindahl Brothers, Inc. in the amount of $334,519.15. The invoice is for work pertaining to the Kean Avenue Resurfacing Project. Alderman Fonte moved to approve Invoice #44456 in the amount of $334,519.15 to Lindahl Brothers, Inc. Alderman Kman second. Roll call: Aldermen Ferrero, Fonte, Kman, Makropoulos, McHugh, Purtill, Waight aye. So approved.

Alderman Kman moved to approve the bills payable for the second half of May 2024 in the amount of $823,831.29. Alderman Purtill second. Roll call: Aldermen Ferrero, Fonte, Kman, Makropoulos, McHugh, Purtill, Waight aye. So approved.

Fonte/Public Safety

Police Chief Bray declared a patrol officer position vacancy. Alderman Fonte moved to approve the filling of the vacant patrol officer position. Alderman Ferrero second. Roll call: Aldermen Ferrero, Fonte, Kman, Makropoulos, McHugh, Purtill, Waight aye. So approved.

Zimmerman/Public Works

Alderman Zimmerman was absent. No report submitted.

Purtill/Laws & Ordinances

Alderman Purtill presented two business license applications for Alboraq Imports, Inc. (delivery of dry and canned goods) located at 7750 West 99th Street and Well Rite LLC d/b/a Well Rite Pharmacy (pharmacy) located at 9323 South Roberts Road. No objections were noted.

Makropoulos/Health & Environmental Control & Auxiliary Police Advisor

Ferrero/Community Affairs/Youth Advisory

Alderman Ferrero noted that there are currently 23 crafters, 12 food vendors/truckers, 12 businesses and 19 car show registrations for the Hickory Hills Street Fair.
