"oday is National Disability Independence Day, also marking the 34th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by then President George H.W. Bush," said La Ha Zwiercan, State Representative for 82nd District (R), according to Facebook. "This crucial legislation has been a cornerstone of the disability rights movement, making strides towards a more inclusive society. Although we've come a long way, there are still important conversations yet to be had. That's why I'm committed to continuing to fight for the rights of people living with disabilities."
The ADA was signed into law on July 26, 1990. It prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in employment, public services, public accommodations and services by private entities, and telecommunications. According to ADA.org, when it comes to employment, the ADA applies to companies with 15 or more employees and requires that reasonable accommodations be provided for qualified applicants or employees. This allows them to perform their job without undue hardship on the employer.

State and local governments are not allowed to discriminate based on disability. Under this law, they are required to make events, programs, and services accessible to all, including those with disabilities. Hotels, restaurants, doctor’s offices, and places of education are also required to make reasonable modifications to serve those with disabilities.
According to ADA.gov, the Department of Justice (DOJ) is responsible for enforcing the ADA through lawsuits and settlement agreements. This includes issues related to employment, businesses and nonprofits open to the public, as well as state and local government programs. The DOJ addresses various aspects such as communication accessibility, physical accessibility, education segregation of people with disabilities, service animals, transportation, and voting.
