FOIA Request Sent to City Of Chicago Heights Finance Department Regarding Sales Tax Records on October 31, 2024

A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City Of Chicago Heights Finance Department regarding sales tax records on October 31, 2024.

As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs at South Cook News, we are seeking access to specific public records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140.

The requested records include a list of businesses that paid sales tax to the city from January 1, 2023, to October 31, 2024. We have asked for this list to contain information about each business's name and type, as well as the amount of sales tax each business paid during this period.

In addition to these specifics, we also requested the total amount of sales tax that the city collected from January 1, 2023, to October 31, 2024.

Access to these public records is essential for us at South Cook News in fulfilling our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. As a media organization involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver.

We will continue our pursuit of transparency and accountability from our local government institutions through such requests.
