A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City of Blue Island, Illinois, regarding building permits on October 30, 2024. The request was made by South Cook News, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
We at South Cook News requested records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. Specifically, we sought a list of all new residential and commercial building permits issued from January 1, 2023 till the date of the request. We asked for this information in electronic format and requested details including the type of permit, date issued, fee paid, requester's name, address and contractor's name.
In addition to this, we also requested a list of all active residential and commercial building permits along with their status. For these active permits as well, we asked for similar details such as type of permit, date issued, fee paid, requester's name, address and contractor's name.
As members of the media dedicated to gathering and reporting news to the public with transparency and accountability in mind, we believe that access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities.
