John P. Stanton, Sr., Veteran and Community Leader from Lemont, Passes Away at 96

John P. Stanton | Markiewicz Funeral Home, P.c. - Lemont

John P. Stanton, Sr., age 96, a longtime resident of Lemont, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on November 16, 2024. John, a beloved son, husband, father, veteran, and community member, will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, siblings, sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. John was known for his career as a carpenter, starting his own residential home-building business and later working on commercial high-rises. He served during the Korean War with the US Army and was a dedicated member of the Carpenter’s Union Local 10.

His dedication to his family was apparent through the picnics and celebrations he hosted and his love for camping, hunting, and fishing. An active member of the community and a devoted Catholic, John volunteered his talents at various parishes, served as a leader for Boy Scouts, and was involved in youth football, firefighting, EMT work, and charitable causes.

Visitation will be held on November 21, 2024, at Markiewicz Funeral Home in Lemont, with a Requiem Mass at St. Alphonsus Parish on November 22, 2024. The funeral procession will proceed to Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery for interment. Donations in his honor can be made to charities supporting veterans, special Olympics, or local parishes.
