The news organization, known for its comprehensive and accurate coverage of local governmental affairs, made the request under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. They specifically asked for data regarding how many "migrants" (referred to as illegal aliens or non-U.S. citizens) are currently enrolled in the school district.
South Cook News emphasized that access to public records is essential for their work in disseminating information and holding public institutions accountable. As a media organization involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, they also requested a fee waiver for this service.
