On January 28, 2025, South Cook News sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to Dolton School District 149 in Illinois. The request sought access to all emails and memos from the past year that contained the keywords "Lucy Calkins" and "Units of Study."
South Cook News is a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs. The requested records are vital for our work as we strive to hold public institutions accountable and provide transparency to the public.
As part of our request, we have also asked for a fee waiver due to our role as a media organization disseminating information to the public.
According to the Illinois Report Card, the average state teacher salary in 2023 was $73,916, and the state average Administrative Salary was $116,908. The average student-to-administrative ratio is 141:1, and the average student-to-teacher ratio is 17:1. Interestingly, 58% of teachers in Illinois have a master's degree or higher.
We at South Cook News believe that access to these records will help shed light on important issues within our local school districts. We await Dolton School District 149's response to our FOIA request.
