Shirley Jean McSweeney, Remembered for Dedication to Family and Community

Shirley Jean McSweeney, nee Wallace, age 90, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2025. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert J. McSweeney, Ret. CPD, and the loving mother of Kathleen Heffernan, the late James, Hon. (Ret.) Colleen McSweeney-Moore, John, Robert McSweeney, Ret. CPD, Brid, Maureen Escherich, the late Arthur, Timothy McSweeney, Julia, Mary McSweeney, and Julie Rush, Robert.

Shirley was cherished by her grandchildren: Patrick, Daniel Heffernan, Maggie, fiance Dennis Gross, Kelly, Mallory McSweeney, Philip Mc Laughlin, Lauren Morse, Brett, Maura, Michael Williams, Katie Escherich, Claire Galbraith, Brendan, Rory McSweeney, Sarah Nadolski, Maeve McSweeney, Nicholas Stiglich, Muriel. She was also a dear great-grandmother to Robert and James Heffernan, Ava, Conor Moore, Philip Mc Laughlin.

She is fondly remembered by her surviving siblings Robert and Donald Davis, and in-laws. Shirley was a longtime precinct captain and judge of elections in the 19th Ward. She shared a love of travel with her husband, Bob, visiting numerous destinations in the U.S. and Europe with the CPD Sergeants Association. Shirley dedicated years of service to the Chicago Public Schools, notably as a truancy officer among other roles.

Visitation will take place on Saturday, July 5, starting at 9:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Fisher Church in Chicago. Private interment will follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of choice are appreciated. Arrangements have been entrusted to Curley Funeral Home in Chicago Ridge.
