He died July 28, 2014, in Palos Heights, Illinois. He played 12 seasons with the Chicago Bears. He helped the team win the 1946 NFL championship. He was known for aggressive defense and his nickname “The Claw.” He earned four Pro Bowl nods and was later named All‑Decade of the 1940s. He stayed in suburban Chicago after retirement. He was posthumously inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2020.
