Owners of 8,239 homes, businesses or lots in Thornton owe almost $25 million in delinquent taxes – or $147.33 per resident, according to the Cook County Treasurer.
In all, owners of more than 19,000 properties in Cook County suburbs have a week to pay delinquent property taxes before their balance is auctioned at the annual tax sale May 4.
Unpaid bills will be purchased by investors who can charge the property owner higher interest on the overdue bill. Overdue taxes on properties in suburban Cook County total nearly $68 million, according to the latest tally from the Cook County Treasurer.
Thornton has the highest total overdue per capita in south suburban Cook. Calumet property owners owe $2.2 million – or $105.49 per resident – and Bloom property owners owe $6.8 million – or $75.01 per resident. Altogether, unpaid taxes in the region total $47.6 million, with 16,067 properties on the list.
