Dolton FD responds to 180 fires in 2017

Dolton Fire Department responded to 436 calls in 2017 - 4.1 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Dolton included 180 fires - 129 structure fires, 25 vehicle fires and 26 other fires. The fire department also responded to four calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $1,942,250 in fire loss - or about $10,790 per fire.

The department also received 252 false calls, including seven malicious calls and 245 other false calls.

The calls resulted in one civilian fire-related death. Additionally, one fire service member was injured in non fire-related incidents.

The Dolton Firefighters Pension Fund, which has 23 active employees and 17 retired or inactive employees, was $1,212,693 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $7,218 for every fire in 2016.
